William S. Rosecrans, born September 16th, 1819, was a General in the American Civil War. Although he wasn’t very educated, he was considered “studious” and “intelligent”. His family wasn’t stable, financially wise, but he wanted to attend the US Military Academy, so he worked hard to get there in 1838. While there he got the nickname, “Rosy” which would be his nickname for his whole life. By 1842, Rosecrans graduated, earlier than many other war generals. He converted to Catholicism in 1845. Rosecrans was a general in not just the Civil War, but his role in those previous battles weren’t as commemorated. In 1854, Rosecrans had to leave the military because of his poor health but ended up re-joining to work with George McClellan. Rosecrans was established as a Colonel in 1861 and later, was given command to some Union forces when McClellan had to move East. Rosecrans’ victories lead him to become the commander of the Army of Cumberland. Unfortunately, after Rosecrans’ huge loss at Chickamauga, he was replaced by George Thomas. After that, Rosecrans didn’t significantly help in the war, but later became the US Minister to Mexico for a year. On March eleventh, 1898, William Rosecrans died. 200 words
