The Civil War
There are many causes that led to the Civil War. One big reason was slavery. The Union and the Confederates constantly debated about whether future territory would be slave states or free states. Trying to help, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which would ban slavery in the Louisiana Purchase -excluding Missouri- north of the 36°30′ line. But, the Kansas-Nebraska Act made it so there could be slavery in those states, using popular sovereignty, which angered the Northerners. Also, the Compromise of 1850 was passed, which stopped slavery from expanding- territorially wise- but, in return, strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. Sources stated that it, “compelled Northerners to seize and return escaped slaves to the South,”(civilwar.org). That compromise indirectly led to John Brown’s Raid. And, although failed, that raid led more to rebel. Another cause of the Civil War was Lincoln’s Election. After he was elected, in 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union along with 6 other states, forming the Confederate States. The Battle of Fort Sumter, 1861, was the last straw. After the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, President Lincoln collected 75,000 men volunteers to join the army for the North. The Civil War had begun.
