The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1, 1863. General George Gordon Meade was put in charge of the Army of Potomac. He promptly ordered his army to march towards Robert E. Lee’s army of 75,000 men. Lee, hearing that news, started to get his troops moving too. Both armies headed over towards Gettysburg. The Confederates were led by the generals Richard Ewell and A.P. Hill. By the second day, Lee had ordered James Longstreet’s and Ewell’s troops to attack the Union army at Culp’s Hill. That Union troop was lead by Daniel Sickles. For hours, there was lots of fighting between them. By the end of that day, both armies had lots of dead and wounded men. Early morning on the third day, July 3rd, the Union once again fought the Confederates. After 7 hours, the Union had strengthened their position in the battle. The day before, Lee thought his troops would win, so he had sent them on a march, leading to “Pickett’s Charge”. The Union attacked them at all sides, killing almost half of them. This battle was a victory for the Union who had 23,000 casualties while the Confederates had 28,000 casualties.
