"I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation . . . I am in earnest. I will not equivocate. I will not excuse. I will not retreat a single inch and I WILL BE HEARD."
-William Lloyd Garrison
William Lloyd Garrison joined the Abolition Movement when he was 25 and also joined the American Colonization Society. He soon realized how that society’s goal was to reduce the amount of slaves in the U.S. which he didn’t want to do. He felt that people should not be enslaved at all, and that they should live normal lives in the U.S, so he started his own newspaper, known as the Liberator. In 1831 where he wrote about the awful ways of slavery and how slaves should have rights. In it, he pointed out how the Constitution stated that everyone was given unalienable rights and that women and slaves should have those rights too. It’s first article, released in 1831, was not popular, but, throughout years, it gained more attention. He also helped organize the New England and American Anti-Slavery Societies. He believed in many things including: that women should be allowed to join the Anti-Slavery Societies, and that the Constitution was pro-slavery. He did not hesitate to criticize the U.S Constitution. Throughout 35 years, Garrison did not fail to publish any issues of the Liberator. The last issue was published after the Civil War ended in 1865. 200 Words |
