There were many casualties in the American Civil War. It is considered the bloodiest war in American history. Casualties are any deaths, injuries, wounds, illnesses, MIA’s, and capturings that cause a soldier unable to continue in the war. There were nearly 1,500,000 casualties in total. Out of that, there was about 620,000 deaths, around 400,000 wounded, and an estimated amount of 476,000 people who got captured or went missing. The second war that even comes close to that death rate is World War II with nearly 405, 400 deaths. More soldiers died from disease than from being killed in battle. Comparing deaths in battle to deaths from disease, there’s a ratio of 3:5. Some battles that had the most casualties were the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Battle of Spotsylvania. During the Battle of Gettysburg, there was 51,116 casualties. 23,053 casualties from the Union and 28,063 from the Confederates. The Battle of Chickamauga had 34,634 casualties and the Battle of Spotsylvania had about 30,000 casualties. The new weapon technology created during the Civil War played a big part in increasing the numbers of casualties, too.
