"It is men who wait to be selected, and not those who seek, from whom we may expect the most efficient service,"
- Ulysses S. Grant
On April 27th, 1822 Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. While he was a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Grant was not the brightest of his class, in fact, he graduated twenty-first out of thirty-nine cadets in the class of 1843. Despite his record he performed as good captain during the Mexican War. After the war ended he was assigned duties far from home. In minimum time he became homesick and started drinking. To avoid being kicked out he resigned. When the war began after about six years of being retired, Grant was thrilled to volunteer again in the Army. He started as a colonel he but quickly raised ranks and became the Commander of the District in Southeast Missouri. After a while Grant has gathered quite a few victories in his pockets. For example the victory at Fort Donelson. But a tragic lost at the battle of Shiloh, lots of people requested his dismissal, but President Lincoln refused. He redeemed himself at the battle of Antietam. Due to his victories Lincoln nominated him general-in-chief of the Armies of the United States. He was made Secretary of War after the war ended.
