Although uneducated, Sojourner Truth was highly recognized for her thoughts on abolitionism, women’s rights, and slavery. She was born, named Isabella, into slavery, to a wealthy Dutch family. She had five children, 3 of which that were sold away from her. Truth soon ended up escaping slavery in 1827. She went from corner to corner, preaching and embracing her religion. By 1840 she joined the Garrisonian Abolitionists and had became very knowledgeable on the Bible. She started singing gospel songs and, in 1843, took the name of Sojourner Truth. During the Civil War, Truth met Abraham Lincoln. She barely had any money, yet she continued to help others during the women’s suffrage movement and through petition drives. Truth was very religious and gave her all to getting equal rights for women and her race. She worked to help freed slaves get land to live on and she he even brought up the idea of having a new state in the west, a“Negro State”. She was widely known for her powerful voice and her “Ain’t I A Woman?” speech that she spoke at a Women’s Convention. Unfortunately, Sojourner Truth died on November 26th, 1883, but she died as free women. 200 Words |
